2019 Call for applications to the Franco-Dutch Descartes-Huygens Prize | Deadline August, 16th
The Descartes-Huygens Prize is open to researchers in all disciplines Applications must be sent before the July, 16th 2019.

This Prize has been awarded since 1995 by the French and the Dutch governments thanks to the cooperation of the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Ministry of Research and the Dutch Royal Academy of Arts and Sciences. Each year two Prize winners are selected: the Netherlands selects the French winner and France selects the Dutch winner.
The Prize aims to support the international career of researchers and the development of partnerships. The French Prize, a grant of EUR 23,000, allows a Dutch laureate to do, within the framework of one or several cooperation projects, one or several stays in one or several French research laboratories within the 2019 year. The cumulative duration of the research stay(s) cannot exceed 3 months.
As of 2017, the Descartes-Huygens Prize is open to researchers in all disciplines (human and social sciences included).
Criteria of eligibility and terms of participation
The candidate must have:
- Obtained their PH.D at least 8 years ago.
- Reached an internationally recognized level of expertise through their scientific achievements.
- A recent or ongoing partnership with a French research team. The candidate has to present what will be developed during their research stay(s) in France within the framework of their cooperation project(s).
- In this call for application, a “Dutch scientist” is understood as a researcher who is a European citizen and has been working for a Dutch institute for a minimum of 5 years.
The Dutch laureate will be selected by a jury assembled by the “Académie des sciences - Institut de France - MESRI (Ministry for Higher Education, Research and Innovation).
Prize and award ceremony
The Prize is a grant of EUR 23, 000 awarded by the French ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Embassy of France in the Netherlands and the French ministry of Higher Education, Research and Innovation.
The 2019 Descartes-Huygens Prize will be presented to the laureate in France during a ceremony organized by the Académie des Sciences.
The laureate will present an overview of the work accomplished in France and in the Netherlands thanks to the Descartes-Huygens Prize in a report which will also highlight the impact of the Prize on the laureate’s career.
Communication about the Prize, research works and laureates
The laureate’s communication about the research realized within the framework of this Prize will mention « Prix Descartes-Huygens » (French ministry of Foreign Affairs, Embassy of France in the Netherlands and the French ministry of Higher Education, Research and Innovation).
With the laureate’s consent, the Descartes-Huygens Prize organizers will be able to share synoptic information on the research realized thanks to the Prize.
Terms of participation
Candidates cannot nominate themselves. French universities, laboratories and research institutions are invited to submit applications for Dutch candidates.
The deadline for the submission of applications is August, 16th 2019.
