Chlo\u00e9 Malaise studeerde af aan Beaux-Arts van Nantes in 2019. Ze is een multidisciplinair kunstenaar die in haar werk de mogelijkheden van geluid onderzoekt om onze relatie met architectuur en technologie onder de aandacht te brengen. Dit doet ze door middel van installaties, performances en het ontwerpen van geluidsinstrumenten. De esthetiek van sciencefiction vormt een belangrijke inspiratiebron voor haar projecten, waarin ze reflecteert op het dominante technopositivistische denken. Tegelijkertijd draagt ze bij aan de bevordering van een techno-actieve wereld. Haar werk is eerder tentoongesteld in Frankrijk en op internationale festivals en evenementen, waaronder Piksel Festival, LUFF Festival, Pure Date Convention en Electric Nights. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Residentieproject<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Als artist in residence bij Willem Twee Studios (1 april tot 30 april 2025) heeft Chlo\u00e9 Malaise gewerkt aan haar albumproject Quantum Th\u00e9ory.<\/em> In dit project heeft ze de dynamiek van het versterken en transformeren van elektromagnetische ruis afkomstig van alledaagse technologische objecten onderzocht. Ze heeft geluidsruimtes, waarin geluid volledig kan worden ervaren, gecre\u00eberd. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Interview met Chlo\u00e9 Malaise<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Waarom heb je ervoor gekozen om als artist in residence in Nederland te verblijven?\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

“Wat me het meest interesseerde was de locatie van de residentie, vooral omdat het netwerk van festivals die kunst en geluid combineren in Nederland indrukwekkend is. De relatie tussen muziek, kunst en andere vormen van expressie is daar veel meer ge\u00efntegreerd dan in Frankrijk, waar de artistieke werelden volgens mij meer gescheiden zijn: dans, theater, muziek en hedendaagse kunst komen niet zo gemakkelijk samen.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Welke instellingen, festivals en kunstenaars hebben indruk op je gemaakt tijdens je verblijf? <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

“Wat vooral indruk op mij maakte in de Willem Twee Studios was de menselijke en educatieve rijkdom van het studioteam. Ze hebben allemaal verschillende benaderingen en ze vullen elkaar echt aan. Hans (lid van het Willem Twee Studios team) bijvoorbeeld, heeft een informele po\u00ebtische stijl en een zeer intu\u00eftieve en gevoelige manier om het creatieproces te benaderen. Rikkert (lid van het Willem Twee Studios team) is altijd beschikbaar om idee\u00ebn uit te wisselen en ons zijn technische en logistieke input te geven, en hij is ook zeer vertrouwd met het culturele landschap van zijn land. Armando (lid van het Willem Twee Studios team) brengt een meer onderwijzende benadering met zich mee, wat essentieel is in een technische omgeving zoals de studio van Willem Twee. Tot slot kon Tim (lid van het Willem Twee Studios team), die zich onlangs bij het team heeft gevoegd, ons op ons gemak stellen met de tools die hij zelf net bij Studio 3 had ge\u00efnstalleerd.  Wat deze ervaring zo verrijkend maakt is juist deze diversiteit aan benaderingen, allemaal gedreven door hetzelfde verlangen om kennis over te dragen. Je wordt niet beperkt tot \u00e9\u00e9n enkele visie: integendeel, je wordt blootgesteld aan een veelheid van visies, allemaal gedreven door dezelfde vrijgevigheid en oprechte betrokkenheid. In staat zijn om je aanpak van dag tot dag te vari\u00ebren is essentieel wanneer je een hele maand in een studio doorbrengt.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hoe heeft je artistieke project zich ontwikkeld tijdens je verblijf? <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

” Mijn uitgangspunt was om te werken met geluidsmateriaal dat ik had meegenomen – met name elektromagnetische veldopnames die ik in de stad had gemaakt – en om te onderzoeken hoe ik afgeleid geluidsmateriaal kon produceren met de instrumenten ter plekke. Ik kon de principes testen van \u2018envelope following\u2019 die de parameters van de synthesizers activeren door de amplitude van de opgevangen geluiden te volgen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Het werken met analoge hulpmiddelen had een diepgaand effect op me: in een digitale omgeving die verzadigd is van plugins en automatisering, was het verfrissend om terug te keren naar de fysieke manipulatie van geluid door het te bewerken en het ene signaal door het andere laat circuleren. Ik was in staat om terug te gaan naar de basis van analoge synthese, die ik tot nu toe slechts gedeeltelijk had begrepen door mijn analoge producties. Ik had me ook ingeschreven voor deze residentie met het doel om te componeren, iets wat ik zelden doe, omdat mijn benadering voornamelijk gebaseerd is op live performance en improvisatie. Omdat ik niet van het conservatorium kwam, had ik nooit de tijd genomen om aan mijn compositie te werken en erover na te denken. Hier heb ik, dankzij de ter beschikking gestelde documenten en de uitwisselingen met de leden van de studio en L\u00e9a – die zelf aan het conservatorium heeft gestudeerd – nieuwe manieren kunnen ontdekken om mijn idee\u00ebn te structureren. Dit gaf me de sleutels en aanknopingspunten om mijn plannen voor de toekomst te verfijnen.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wat trok je aan in het Nouveau Grand Tour NL-programma?  <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

“Wat ik vooral waardevol vond aan dit programma is de vrijheid die het biedt. Je komt aan met een idee, een project om mee te beginnen, maar je hebt de tijd – en vooral het recht – om het te zien evolueren. Mijn project is sterk ge\u00ebvolueerd en vandaag kan ik niet wachten om terug te keren naar mijn studio om te zien hoe deze ervaring mijn manier van werken zal be\u00efnvloeden. Als ik terugkom, denk ik dat ik dankzij wat ik heb geleerd, mezelf meer tijd en geduld kan geven om de tools die ik al heb grondiger te leren kennen. Wat ik me vooral zal herinneren is dat deze residentie mij hulpmiddelenheeft gegeven voor de toekomst. Het stelde me in staat om nieuw geluidsmateriaal mee te nemen dat ik kan hergebruiken in andere projecten, maar vooral om mijn methodes van compositie en geluidsonderzoek in vraag te stellen en mijn denken te verrijken.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
