Charly Bechaimont studeerde af aan de \u00c9cole sup\u00e9rieure d\u2019art et de design in Reims in 2022. Hij is een multidisciplinair kunstenaar wiens performatieve, sculpturale en cinematografische werken een onmiddellijke en rechtstreekse relatie met het object, de omgeving en het lichaam tot stand brengen. Van zelfbeschadiging met een nietmachine tot het opdelen van een caravan en het performatieve gebruik van giftige vloeistoffen; zijn werk bevindt zich op het snijvlak van queer, reizigers en proletarische identiteiten. Bovendien werpt hij tegelijkertijd een kritische blik op de politieke rol van precaire en gedomineerde lichamen binnen het institutionele geheel.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Residentieproject<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Als artist in residence bij Brutus (1 april tot 30 juni 2025) is Charly Bechaimont dieper ingegaan op zijn onderzoek naar giftige materialen, die hij ziet als bewijs van sociale ongelijkheid en discriminatie. Hierbij heeft hij zich met name gericht op de stoffen die door industri\u00eble bedrijven in Rotterdam worden gebruikt. De geschiedenis van de stad en de stedelijke dynamiek, zoals migratiestromen, culturele transities en industri\u00eble materialen, sluiten bijzonder goed aan op zijn artistieke benadering.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Waarom heb je ervoor gekozen om als artist in residence in Nederland te verblijven?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Als kunstenaar heb ik het altijd belangrijk gevonden om te zien wat er elders gebeurt. Ondanks de globalisering bestaan er nog steeds sterke culturele nuances en ik probeer daar altijd gevoelig voor te zijn als artist in residence. Wat me ook aansprak tijdens mijn verblijf bij Brutus, was de harmonie tussen de locatie, het programma en vooral de visie die de ruimte lijkt te sturen. Er is een echte samenhang tussen inhoud en vorm. Brutus is een bewust braakliggend terrein, een rauwe, levende ruimte die toeschouwers uit hun comfortzone duwt. Het is een houding die ik deel met mijn eigen werk. In sommige van mijn voorstellingen nodig ik het publiek bijvoorbeeld uit om illegaal een ruimte te betreden om een kunstwerk te bewonderen. Dit gebaar, dat de plaats van de toeschouwer en het kader van voorstellingen ter discussie stelt, resoneert met de instelling van Brutus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Welke instellingen, festivals en kunstenaars hebben indruk op je gemaakt tijdens je verblijf?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Wat vooral indruk op mij heeft gemaakt tijdens mijn verblijf waren de ontmoetingen die ik kon hebben met een reeks artiesten die buiten de traditionele kring van de hedendaagse kunst werken. Ik was erg ontroerd door de ontwikkeling die microgemeenschappen zoals \u2018ballroom\u2019 en \u2018voguing\u2019 – doorlopen. Deze groepen worden vaak gemarginaliseerd en soms ook verstoten door andere sociale groepen. Hier heb ik de kans gehad om mensen te ontmoeten die hun gemeenschap van herkomst hebben moeten ontvluchten en die proberen om hun leven opnieuw op te bouwen in een nieuwe omgeving. Deze uitwisselingen waren essentieel voor mij, omdat ze diep resoneerden met mijn eigen reis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hoe heeft je artistieke project zich ontwikkeld tijdens je verblijf?\u00a0<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Mijn project ontwikkelde zich naarmate ik nieuwe mensen ontmoette en rekening hield met de lokale omgeving. Vanaf het begin wilde ik het gebruik van giftige of psychotrope stoffen onderzoeken in relatie tot de omgeving van de haven van Rotterdam – een plek van bedrijvigheid, materialen en beweging. Ik heb dit idee in de studio in de praktijk kunnen brengen, door werken te produceren die deze denkwijze weerspiegelen, terwijl ik een zekere mate van openheid in mijn werk heb gelaten. Essentieel voor deze ontwikkeling was de vrijheid die de residentie bood: de mogelijkheid om te experimenteren zonder druk voor onmiddellijke resultaten is een zeldzame luxe voor een kunstenaar. Deze flexibiliteit stelde me in staat om mijn werk te testen, aan te passen en een oeuvre te ontwikkelen dat zowel gebaseerd was op de locatie als gevoed werd door uitwisselingen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wat trok je aan in het Nouveau Grand Tour NL-programma? \u00a0<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Wat mij meteen aansprak aan de Nouveau Grand Tour NL was de actieve aanwezigheid van de mensen die de residentie runnen. Vanaf het begin kreeg ik concrete netwerkmogelijkheden aangeboden die ook daadwerkelijk plaatsvonden. Dat is niet altijd het geval in andere residenties, waar je je soms aan je lot overgelaten voelt. Hier voelde ik dat er een echte wil was om contacten te leggen en uitwisselingen aan te moedigen, wat zeer waardevol is. Ik denk zelfs dat sommige relaties na mijn verblijf zullen voortduren. Er zijn mensen met wie ik contact ga houden, met wie ik in de toekomst misschien dingen ga opbouwen. En dat is voor mij ook wat een verblijf in een residentie tot een succes maakt: wanneer er in de loop der tijd een levend, menselijk spoor wordt achtergelaten.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
