About
Founded in 1970, the Netherlands Institute for Advanced Studies (NIAS) is part of the Royal Netherlands Academy (KNAW). Being the oldest institute for advanced studies in Europe, the NIAS constitutes an intellectual haven for an international community of scientists, writers, journalists and artists, enabling them to devote themselves to an independent research project. Committed to promoting interdisciplinary, curiosity-driven research for established and early-career researchers in all the humanities and social sciences, the NIAS is a place where science and the arts meet.
Location
Since 2016, the Netherlands Institute for Advanced Study has been nestled within the historic heart of the Dutch capital, Amsterdam. The offices (NIAS Office) are located in the quiet, peaceful Sint Jorishof district. The apartments of the residents, located in the NIAS Fellows House, are a three-minute walk from the offices.
Amsterdam is renowned for its rich cultural and social life; it is home to museums, music venues, restaurants and festivals. Amsterdam is also an international city: people of 180 different nationalities live here and the majority of its inhabitants speak English.

During the summer, the two Nouveau Grand Tour NL artists in residence will be welcomed alongside a group of former NIAS residents who have applied for a ‘NIAS Alumni’ residency which gives them the opportunity to live and work at the NIAS for a short period of time.
- Accessibility: The NIAS can be accessed by those using a wheelchair.
- Hosting of family members: Family apartments can be made available, however, these are not located in the residents’ apartment building (NIAS Fellows House). These family apartments are also further away from the offices (NIAS Office) than the NIAS Fellows House.

Support and guidance
In addition to the financial, administrative, human and professional support provided by the Institut français NL, the residency offers the following support:
- Artistic guidance: Nouveau Grand Tour NL artists in residence must be able to work independently throughout their residency.
- Material guidance: No specific materials or equipment is provided to Nouveau Grand Tour NL artists in residence.
- Technical guidance: No technical support is offered, as the NIAS does not provide workshops dedicated to artistic practice.
- Accommodation: An individual apartment, located in the city centre (address: Kloveniersburgwal 23), is provided for each Nouveau Grand Tour NL artist in residence. The apartment is fully equipped with a bathroom, a functional kitchen and a washing machine. It is located in the NIAS Fellows House, 3 minutes from the main building (NIAS Office). The family apartments are located in the city centre, in the ‘Zuid’ or the ‘Oost’ neighbourhoods.
- Workspace: An individual or shared office is provided for each Nouveau Grand Tour NL artist in residence. This office is located in the main building (NIAS Office, address: Korte Spinhuissteeg 3). The offices are well-equipped and accessible from 8am to 6pm on working days (summer opening hours).
- Professional guidance: Nouveau Grand Tour NL artists in residence will be invited to an introductory meeting at the beginning of the residency, as well as an evaluation meeting at the end of the residency by the NIAS Head of Academic Affairs. Between these two meetings, it is possible to use the NIAS Director’s weekly ‘open door hours’ or to request other meetings with the team. Each week, a joint lunch is organised for all the staff and residents at the NIAS, to discuss research prospects and to develop a network of contacts. This interdisciplinary community of residents at the NIAS is a true asset to the Nouveau Grand Tour NL artists in residence. The NIAS team is also able to offer advice and facilitate professional contacts.
- Public programme: The NIAS does not offer a public programme in the summer. The NIAS proposes to promote the Nouveau Grand Tour NL artists in residence in its residents’ booklet for the following academic year.
